Engagement Ceremony: Frequently Asked Questions (Q&A)
Are there any dress code requirements? There are no specific rules, but it is best for both families to discuss and decide on a balanced attire. At our hotel, it is common for the groom to wear a dark suit, the bride to wear a furisode (long-sleeved kimono) or a dress, the father to wear a dark suit, and the mother to wear a houmongi (formal kimono) or a dress.
Could you please handle the proceedings of the engagement ceremony? Upon request, one of our hotel's experienced staff members will be assigned to assist you. Please feel free to consult with our planner.
What kind of engagement gifts should I prepare? While it's generally customary to follow the traditions of the bride's region, recently many people are choosing simplified engagement gifts. Our hotel has partnered with department store engagement gift sections, and our specialist staff will assist you.
What items should the groom prepare? The engagement gifts consist of the engagement gifts themselves plus a list of items (similar to a delivery slip listing the items to be presented). However, recently, it has become more common for the groom's side to prepare the receipt (a document confirming receipt of the engagement gifts), which is traditionally prepared by the bride's side, when they purchase the engagement gifts.
What items should the bride's side prepare? This includes a letter of acceptance plus a return gift for the engagement gifts received. As mentioned above, recently it is becoming more common for the groom's side to prepare the letter of acceptance as well.
